So, so I am a little mad that they left this week's episode of "Once Upon A Time" with a cold stare of the evil mayor. At least tonight we get some backstory on how Regina became the Evil Queen with no soul and that she may not even realize that she's the evil queen. The flash of the present day world and the fairy tale world is slightly confusing, though I do love a good backstory to catch people up. Plus, the way Regina was looking at the picture of the evil queen, I truly don't think she knows who she is just yet.
She’s upset with her son because there are missing pages from the Big Book of Exposition. He asks why she cares, and she says “I care because you think I’m some evil queen,” she says, which is really funny. He says she isn’t his mother. But then she looks really confused when the clock chimes so maybe she does remember? How long can the show keep this up? And on a side note, how many seasons can this show go on? This is what is baffling.
So then Miss Regina arrives with a basket of apples for Emma, the birth-mom, and who Henry believes, the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, and immune to the curse that keeps everyone from knowing who they are and time from moving.
Emma is staying at an inn run by Little Red (Riding Hood, yes) and her grandmother .Thanks, Emma says, all suspicious. I mean come on, mayor, you don’t want to be thought of as an evil queen and you show up with a basket of apples? How dumb.
Ok, so now it's flashback to the wedding and evil queen in a black lace outfit. The mirror, who seems kind of like her evil sidekick, wonders how she’ll destroy everybody’s happiness. She goes to her BFF's fortress to get the Curse from her—bestie being Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty?).. It’s kind of funny that Regina took a sleeping curse from her and its obvious, since Snow woke up with one little kiss.
Maleficent pets her kind of shabby brown unicorn and tells her to consider a pet. Um, ok? Cue a major cat fight, with sparks flying. Regina wins, but Maleficent tries to warn her that “there are lines even we shouldn’t cross,” and “enacting it will take a terrible toll. There will be an emptiness inside you.” Maybe the horrible job of being a mayor of a snooze of a town??
Next question...why is the editor SO afraid of the neighbor? Who is this character?
Ok, so now we see Emma about to eat an apple at a diner, because she’s just that dumb, when Little Red , who works there, brings her a hot chocolate, sent to her by an admirer. Saved by the hot chocolate. She chats with the Sheriff, thinking it’s from him, but it turns out it’s from Henry, who wants her to walk him to school. Cute kid.
He has a plan to break the curse. It will be called Operation Cobra (I would have called it Operation Stiltskin). Emma’s about to take a bite out of the apple when he says “don’t eat that!” and throws it away. Ok, Emma is just a plain dumb blonde.
At school, Emma chats with teacher Mary Margaret (ah, Ginnifer. Love her!) who admits that Henry thinks she’s Snow White (Emma's mommy!). Emma says she’s not in the book. Liar.
She goes to see Jiminy Cricket aka the kid's shrink. She says she wants to know what is causing Henry’s fairy tale obsession. C'mon girlfriend, you can understand why).
Regina, his mother, is a complicated woman, the therapist admits, when Emma points out that he’s been seeing him longer than he’s had the book. Jiminy then offers to show her the file, because “you’re very important to him.” It’s completely unthinkable, but this is a fairy tale after all. He warns her to be careful how she handles his mental obsession with the book because destroying his imagination would be devastating.
The minute she leaves, he calls Regina. “Did she take the file?” Great, a set-up. Regina interrupts class to tell Henry about Emma’s arrest and that she’s a con-artist. This teacher is too nice. Seriously. She comes to the rescue of bailing out Emma, who gets arrested for the "stolen file".
Next shot is Emma cutting limbs off the apple tree while Regina looks out the window of her sleek black and white office. OMG who decorates the sets? I want this mayor's house badly! Welcome back Rumpelstiltskin, who is a troll? goblin? Ugh, he's ugly. One of the mice on the cell floor turns into Regina. He tells her how Snow and hubby visited and lets on something about a child and how it could break the curse. Because all curses can be broken. So she makes a deal with him. He tells her that all he wants is comfort in the new land and that the prize steed as a sacrifice wasn’t nearly enough. It has to be something more precious—the heart of the thing she loves most.
And it’s motivation time! “what I love most died because of snow white,” she emotes. There must be someone else. Oh the actors are having a lot of fun with this. “You know what you love,” says Rump. “Go kill it.” Uh oh! Who's gonna die!? Back at the Inn, grandmother says she has to ask Emma to leave. There’s a “no felons rule,” that’s a city ordinance. I smell a poison apple a brewing. Regina picks apples up as she talks to the cop to say she destroyed city property, and wants her arrested. The cop really doesn’t want to do it, and thinks she’s been setting up.
“I made you sheriff! I can rid you of your job!" says Regina. And the sheriff says if it will only get worse, and the only one who will get hurt is Henry. Regina does look upset. Which I don't get cause isn't the plan was to adopt Snow White’s grandson for evil reasons.
(Randomness, I hate the yellow VW bug).
Cue the meeting. Emma says she has no intention of taking Henry from anyone. But she wants to make sure Henry’s OK. Emma says that his obsession with fairy tale characters is crazy. Henry at the door hears the word and is upset and it’s another setup since Regina knew he’d come by.
You have no soul, Emma tells her. Cue the flashbacks! We see the queen striding along, as the mirror sounds really worried. Is she going to kill him? She tells the butler she has to cut out the heart of the thing I love most.
“Me,” he says. “Daddy, I don’t know what to do,” she says. What the hell!? Daddy is the butler? I don't even know what to say about this. He tells her to start over, be happy, etc. Tear. Boo hoo. “I can be happy, just not here,” she says, and stabs Daddy. “Sorry,” she mutters. RIP Daddy Butler. Sniff. What I don't get is what Snow White took from her? The original fairy tale showed that Snow White had the love and affection of her father and the title of being the most fairest of them all. Is this entire series over a title? Borrow one from those little brats on Toddlers and Tiaras.
Emma knocks on Mary Margaret’s (sounds like a nun) door, and pays her back the bail money. Over a cup of cocoa (running theme, she, Henry and now Mommy Snow take cinnamon in their hot chocolate, which is also a big love of mine)… Mary Margaret says she has the oddest feeling that they’d met before. Emma says she’s leaving, because if she stays it would be bad for Henry. Henry’s in therapy with Jiminy Cricket, all sad and lonely when Emma breaks in. He doesn’t want to talk to her but she says she thinks the curse is crazy, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t true. And that the only way to break the curse is by tricking the evil queen into thinking they are nonbelievers. He smiles and sits up. Brilliant! And Emma burns the pages so Regina will never see them. (FIRST smartest thing this woman has done so far in this town).
Back in fairyland, another bonfire, another box with a heart, no additional ghouls. Regina throws the heart on the fire and this time there’s a huge huge cloud. When it’s done, Regina puts a black rose on a grave and says “I love you Daddy.” “Henry, Beloved Father,” it says. Dum dum dum....now we know how adopted boy Henry got his name. How morbid. Regina is fixing up her tree while Mr. Gold, aka Rumpy, walks up. She brags to him that Emma is probably halfway to Boston by now. He lets her know he just saw Emma strolling down main street with the boy. He offers to help her, of course, for a price. She says she’s not in the business of making deals with him anymore. Does he remember? Oh right, the boy he got for her. Rumpy is a social worker? She then asks, "Where did you get him!?". Who is this Emma Swan? She asks Mr. Gold. He says she already knows. She orders him to tell her what he knows, but he refuses. Next week we’re going to get some of Snow White’s backstory, and some in present day of Snow and Charming in a coma.
So what do you think? Does Regina believe she’s an evil queen? Will Charming come out of the coma? Who is Henry's father? Which fairy tale characters are the sherrif and the editor? Oh boy, can't wait!
