Did Harry Potter Steal An Alexander McQueen Dress??

Knockoffs in fashion aren’t exactly a new trick, but I was a little surprised this morning when I saw photos of a Harry Potter movie costume that looks a lot (and I mean a lot) like one of the late Alexander McQueen’s designs.

Part one of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will feature the wedding of the characters Fleur Delacour and Bill Weasley, and few leaked images indicate that the bride will wear a white dress with two black phoenixes that wrap around most of the construction and meet near the decolletage.

Jany Temime, a French designer who’s credited on IMDb as the costume designer for the film, had this to say about the dress:

“Fleur’s dress is made in organza and decorated with a pair of phoenixes that face one another on the bodice and form the silhouette of a heart. I chose the phoenix because, like love, it is eternal.”

It’s a lovely sentiment attached to a great dress. And it was an even greater dress still when it came down McQueens fall 2008 runway, when it featured peacocks instead of phoenixes. Did changing the applique from a real bird to a fake one turn a real dress into a knockoff, or did the house of McQueen make a custom dress for the film?
